SEEDFOLKids After School Garden Experience

What We Could Be Exchange Inc.

WWcB’s SEEDFOLKids After School Garden Experience is a free community-based leadership program where both literal and figurative sustainable "school gardens" are created by the students themselves. Through an assortment of interrelated STEM-centered garden activities, we work through our community partnerships to help young students, their parents, and school staff “make the shift” towards sustainable living principals. In so doing,  participants gain a new more community-focused, entrepreneurial perspective as leaders, as "force multipliers," prepared to transform not only their schools and neighborhoods, but their own lives as well.

We began our first SEEDFOLKids cohort during the 2007-2008 school year with 200 low and high performing students who through their actions ultimately impacted their school's culture and performance level by increasing their state school grade from a “D” three years running to an “A” the following year. We resumed SEEDFOLKids cohorts in 2017 adding up to 30 third grade student leaders each year as “force multipliers” to help their schools (and families) make the "cultural shift."  SEEDFOLKids students become the much needed peer influencers in their schools from grade 3 through grade 5 and on into their middle and high school years.

SEEDFOLKids is an ambitious children and youth-driven program based on Newbery Medal winner Paul Fleischman’s novel SEEDFOLKs where a junk-strewn city lot is transformed into an urban garden, a process that transforms the gardeners’ lives as well.
