Re-building Schools through Sustainable Gardens

WWcB’s SEEDFOLKids After School Garden Experience is a community-based leadership program that fosters sustainable living principles among young students, their parents, and school staff. The program involves creating both literal and figurative sustainable "school gardens" through various STEM-centered garden activities. By partnering with the community, we aim to facilitate a shift towards sustainability. As participants engage in these activities, they develop a more community-focused and entrepreneurial perspective, becoming effective leaders and "force multipliers." This newfound perspective empowers them to transform not only their schools and neighborhoods but also their own lives. Our journey began in the 2007-2008 school year with 200 low and high performing students. Their actions and dedication had a remarkable impact on their school's culture and performance, significantly raising their state school grade from a “D” for three consecutive years to an “A” in the following year. After a hiatus, we resumed SEEDFOLKids cohorts in 2017, welcoming up to 30 third-grade student leaders each year as "force multipliers." These young leaders play a pivotal role in driving the "cultural shift" within their schools and families. They continue to influence their peers throughout grades 3 to 5 and even into their middle and high school years, acting as much-needed positive influencers in their communities.

SEEDFOLKids is an ambitious child and youth-driven program based on Newbery Medal winner Paul Fleischman’s novel Seedfolks

where a junk-strewn city lot is transformed into an urban garden, a process that transforms the gardeners’ lives as well.
